iHuman Youth Society’s 4th Annual Art Walk

iHuman’s Annual Art Walk is a two-day celebration invites Edmonton to experience youth-created art, and see how belonging and opportunity can be part of the solution to youth homelessness.

On September 11 and 12, iHuman Youth Society will open its doors for the 4th Annual iHuman Art Walk, bringing together young artists, community members and supporters for two days of art, creativity and connection.

Taking place Friday, September 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, September 12 from 2 to 5 p.m., iHuman Art Walk will transform the street into a vibrant showcase of original work created by young people who access its programs and studios.

This annual Art Walk is about much more than what hangs on the walls. At a time when Edmonton continues to face significant challenges around youth homelessness, poverty, mental health and disconnection, iHuman is demonstrating what it looks like to invest in young people before moments of crisis. For nearly 30 years, iHuman has built its approach around a simple understanding: young people need more than services. They need trusted relationships. They need places where they belong. They need opportunities to discover what they are good at, develop skills, earn income, express themselves and be recognized for what they contribute. Art Walk brings that philosophy to life.

We also have to ask what will help them build a life tomorrow.”— BERYL BACCHUS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, IHUMAN YOUTH SOCIETY “Art Walk is one way we create that possibility,” Bacchus continues. “When a young person sees their work displayed, meets someone who values what they have created or earns money from their art, they begin to see themselves differently, and their community sees them differently, too.”

Now in its fourth year, Art Walk reflects Bacchus’ broader vision for iHuman: bringing the community closer to young people and creating meaningful opportunities for youth to be recognized not by the barriers they face, but by their talent, ideas and potential. Today, more than 500 young people connect with iHuman each week, with more than 26,000 visits annually. Young people can access practical assistance, social-work navigation, mental-health supports and cultural connections alongside professional creative spaces for visual art, music, fashion and performance. The combination matters. “No single organization or intervention is going to solve youth homelessness,” Bacchus adds. “It takes a community willing to create pathways for young people to belong, participate and move forward. Art gives us an extraordinary way to begin those relationships.”

The iHuman Art Walk Demonstrates the Power Behind Art

Throughout Art Walk, guests will have the opportunity to experience and purchase original youth-created artwork, meet members of the iHuman community and see firsthand what happens when creativity is treated not simply as recreation, but as a tool for connection, confidence, skill-building and opportunity. For young artists, the event creates a public platform for their work and an opportunity to participate in Edmonton’s creative community. For the broader community, it offers something equally important: an opportunity to encounter young people through their creativity and strengths rather than through statistics or stereotypes. Art Walk asks Edmonton to see what iHuman sees every day: extraordinary potential, and what becomes possible when a community chooses to invest in it.
