In Edmonton, winter doesn’t wait for anyone.
The temperature drops, the streets grow quieter, and for young people without a safe place to call home, every gust of wind can mean danger.
At iHuman Youth Society, we serve as a vital day-shelter space for the homeless youth in Edmonton, offering warmth, safety, and connection through art, culture, and care.
We believe no young person should be left in the cold — not this winter, not ever.
The Harsh Reality
For the youth we serve, winter can be life-changing in ways many of us can’t imagine.
Some have lost fingers or toes to frostbite. Others have faced violence or exploitation while seeking a warm place to sleep. These are not isolated stories, they are part of a larger reality for Edmonton’s marginalized youth navigating survival in freezing temperatures.
Every year, we see the life altering toll that the cold takes — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Yet even in those harshest moments, we also see something extraordinary: resilience, creativity, and courage.
A Safe Space for Warmth and Connection
At iHuman, warmth is more than heat — it’s human connection.
Inside our building, youth find access to:
- Warm clothing, snacks, and hot drinks
- Hygiene supplies, laundry, and showers
- Counselling, crisis support, and care planning
- Cultural and artistic programming that honours identity and healing
Through art, mentorship, and compassionate support, youth rediscover stability, community, and purpose. Here, a paintbrush or a warm meal can become a bridge — from isolation to belonging.
As a trusted day-shelter space for the homeless, iHuman continues to ensure that every young person who walks through our doors is met with dignity, safety, and care.
Culturally Grounded Care
Many of the young people who come through our doors are Indigenous, and their healing journeys are deeply rooted in culture and ceremony. Smudge, storytelling, and community connection are woven into our daily work.
When iHuman speak of warmth, we also mean the warmth of being seen, understood, and celebrated.
